This year, OpenAI announced it would start running ads on ChatGPT. At the time, details were slim, and it was unclear how marketers would manage these ads.
Some early details have now emerged – watch my conversation with Greg Finn on Marketing O’Clock for some early thoughts.
I’ve recently launched my first campaign, which was built through the Optmyzr platform. As far as I understand, the Open AI ads manager is not publicly available at this time. Here is a short outline of my experience so far.
Campaign Structure
The campaign structure is very similar to other major ad platforms like Google and Meta.
- Campaigns are the highest level of organization.
- Budgets are set at the campaign level.
- Marketers can set a lifetime budget for each campaign, but there is no daily budget option at this time.
- Campaign names, start dates, and end dates can also be set at this level.

Ad Groups and Targeting
Ad groups are the next level of organization within a campaign.
- Marketers can create multiple ad groups within a single campaign.
- However, there are no targeting options available at the ad group level.
- This is because OpenAI’s algorithms handle targeting automatically based on the content of the ads and the user’s intent.

Ad Creation
Ad creation is the final step in setting up a campaign on the OpenAI Ads platform.
- Marketers have two options for creating ads: “AI Suggest” and manual.
- With “AI Suggest,” marketers can provide a landing page URL, and the system will automatically generate ad copy and images based on the content of the page. You are given the option to tweak this.
- With the manual option, marketers can provide their own ad copy and images.
- Ads consist of a title, body text, and an image or image URL.

Reporting and Tracking
Reporting is currently limited to basic metrics like impressions and clicks.
- There is no conversion tracking available at this time.
- Marketers can set up UTM tracking on the backend to see where their sales/leads are coming from.
- OpenAI has hinted that conversion tracking will be available in the near future.
The Future of ChatGPT Ads
ChatGPT Ads are still in its early stages, and there are many unanswered questions about how it will evolve. However, the platform’s focus on automated targeting and AI-driven ad creation suggests that it will be a powerful tool for marketers looking to reach a highly engaged audience on ChatGPT.
As the platform continues to develop, we can expect to see more advanced features and reporting options. Marketers should keep a close eye on OpenAI Ads as it has the potential to become a major player in the digital advertising landscape.
As with any new platform, I highly recommend getting on as early as you can. Take advantage of the first-mover advantage where you can likely get traffic at a better rate than other mainstream channels.
