Paid search is evolving faster than ever, but the marketers who will thrive are the ones who combine automation with human judgement, stay curious, and lean into community.

If there’s one thing crystal clear from the past year it’s paid search is changing fast — but the people behind it matter more than ever.

Between editing paid media content, hosting PPC Live The Podcast, running events, moderating communities, and having countless conversations with PPC pros, I’ve had a front-row seat to how our industry is evolving. And honestly? It’s been equal parts exciting, overwhelming and energising.

So I wanted to sit down and share a few reflections — not predictions, not hot takes — just things I’ve noticed from being deep in paid search every single week.

TLDR

Consistency Is Still Underrated

We talk a lot about performance in paid search. ROAS. CPA. Scaling. Automation.

But something I don’t think we talk about enough is consistency — in how we show up, how we learn and how we contribute.

Over the past year, I’ve been reminded that building credibility in this industry isn’t about being the loudest voice or jumping on every trend. It’s about turning up regularly, sharing what you’re learning (even when it’s messy), and staying curious.

Whether that’s posting on LinkedIn, speaking at an event, or asking questions in a community — consistency compounds. Not just in visibility, but in confidence.

AI Isn’t the Enemy (But Blind Trust Is)

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: AI and automation in paid search.

Almost every podcast conversation I’ve had recently touches on it in some way. Performance Max. Broad match. Automated bidding. AI-generated creatives. And yes — there’s anxiety. That’s understandable.

But what keeps coming up again and again is this:

AI works best when paired with human judgement.

The strongest PPC practitioners I speak to aren’t trying to fight automation — they’re learning how to guide it. They’re asking better questions. They’re spotting patterns. They’re knowing when to step in and when to step back.

Strategy, context, and communication with clients? That’s still on us. And I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Real Accounts Are Messy — and That’s Normal

One of my favourite things about podcasting is how honest people get when you ask them about real accounts.

Broken tracking. Sudden drops in conversion volume. Domains causing issues. Bid strategies that just… stop working.

It’s easy to feel like you’re failing when something goes wrong in an account — especially when automation is involved. But the reality is: paid search is rarely perfect, and even the best-run accounts need hands-on problem solving.

Some of the best conversations I’ve shared recently have been about fixing things — not scaling them. And I think we need more of that honesty in the industry.

Community Is the Real Advantage

If I’m honest, this is the part that means the most to me.

Running PPC Live, hosting events, managing WhatsApp groups, and speaking to people across all levels of paid search has shown me how powerful community really is.

People learn faster when they talk to each other.
People feel less isolated when they realise others are dealing with the same challenges.
People grow when they’re allowed to ask “basic” questions without judgement.

And with all the fast paced changes coming our way, community allows us to ensure we are implementing these changes correctly and not to panic when things go wrong. There is always someone on hand to steer us right.

Paid search can be a lonely role — especially in-house or freelance. Community turns that isolation into shared momentum.

So… Where Does That Leave Paid Search?

Here’s what I genuinely believe after the past year:

  • Automation will continue to evolve
  • Platforms will continue to change the rules
  • Paid search will get more complex, not less

But the marketers who thrive will be the ones who:

  • Stay curious
  • Invest in their thinking, not just their tools
  • Share what they’re learning
  • Lean into community

Paid search isn’t just about keywords and bidding anymore. It’s about people, perspective and adaptability.

And honestly? That’s what makes it exciting.

If you’re still learning, still questioning, still testing — you’re exactly where you need to be.
